3D Magic Cat by Detrah 3D Magic Cat by Detrah
Hi! Here's some schoolwork for a change. I don't usually show it here, because I don't think you'd be too interested in seeing 3D-model of a lamp or something.

The last 3D-work I showed here was from 2 years ago, woah!! It's bad, so bad. And I was so proud of it too.

The assignment was to make a 3D-character with Maya. She's kinda inspired by Black Cat from the comic she was in! I was thinking she's have a magic wand that's like a string toy. We're gonna be rigging these later, hh hhh h h let me rig, let me animate!!!

Now that I have finished 3D modeling:
Your topology.
How in gods name did you get it that perfect.

Thanks for calling it perfect! Trust me it's not.

If you're having trouble making pretty topology but still have the basic shape you want, you could try the quad draw tool (if using Maya)! Maybe you've used it but in case you haven't: Duplicate the mesh, select the duplicate, make it into a live surface by pressing one of the magnet-looking icons (first one from right) and select Quad Draw from the modeling toolkit. If you scroll down I think it shows you a list of commands.

Ah, I am familiar with quad draw--I ended up with too many tris (trying ti squeeze in the whole shape rather than rework it), But if there is a comand list/setting options for quad draw, I will look into it, thank you!

I can't for the life of me get the hang of it. :D I'd just rather do it by hand haha.

Time to leave another comment on this one: Now that I'v modeled my first organic character, I have...SO MANY QUESTIONS. On how this looks SO FRICKEN GOOD.

How did yours turn out!

I wish I had answers!! I just... followed my concept drawing.

Ah, I'm still working on it, I never post stuff here anymore, but maybe I will when it's done. It's not bad, I'll give it that, but it looks good because I've done most of the work in Mudbox.
But since I only imported my character design into Maya and not Mudbox, I know I went off model.

My question here is like, the bell and the buttons. If you sculpted the details on those buttons in Maya, I'm damn impressed, I have no clue how you did it.
And the wire frame too, is like...everything is even, there are no abnormalities. I did a duplicate special to make sure my sculpting was even, BUT STILL--you know I guess it is my first attempt after all XD

Anyway, I'm just impressed with how clean and professional this looks, great job, dude

XD This is really stunning, I love the sketch.
You said that she was based off of something, what exactly was it?
And is Maya your character or a character of your college class collectively?

She was based on Cat from this comic!

Maya is the 3D program I used to make this. :) This magic cat is a character I made for this assignment, so she's mine.

Awww that's adorable!!
OH XD I'm sorry I didn't understand XD
That's quite amazing! She's sooo adorable, if you so happen to draw her again, make sure you upload it! She's beautiful!

EDIT: OH I'm so sorry I'm so dull! I understand what you mean now. Ugh I'm so embarrassed haha

Don't even worry about it! Maybe I should have been more clear.

To make you feel better here's an embarrassing story from me:
Once upon a time I uploaded a drawing that had a fox in it, and someone commented "what does the fox say", and I answered all seriously, somehow not getting that it was a joke based on that meme song.................

Ahhhhh, you are WAAAY better at Maya than me!
Organic shapes. How. Do you just nurbs curve to poly everything? That's what I do whenever I want an organic shape, but I feel like that's not industry standard/is incorrect.
in other words. You too good, how do I get that good?

It'd be interesting to see your works on Maya!

Oh no way, I can't even imagine how to do that with curves, I'm not good at using them. I just used polygon primitives and went from there. :)

Haha well going to school that focuses on 3D helps! I tried on my own before but boy its just so much easier to listen to a teacher and ask for help when needed.

Oh, I'd be happy to send you my 3D art final Maya scene or the Render video since I hardly post art here or...anywhere anymore XD

And yeah, that's what I was figuring. For some reason, I'm having trouble wrapping my head around how to get like, other shapes from the polygons. I SUPPOSE that's why I'm in school in the first place. XD

And I have tried to learn on my own too but I agree, listening to a lecture is better for me.

Please do! I'd love to see.

You can do it! I'd try to help but how do you even explain something like that. :D Just.. follow the shape of your reference pics. You put them on image planes on the side and front view (I'm sure you know that already but JUST IN CASE. I'm desperate to have anything useful to say about this).

Oh absolutely. Can't get anything done on my own.

"It's bad, so bad." I found that not bad. ^^;

( but I suck in modelization, I try to do a ninja cat many years ago and totally fail, I prefer to animate ^^; )

True, it's not the worst! Thanks for saying so. But it is pretty bad, even at the time I actually kinda felt like the model looked weird if not looked from reeeeally specific camera angles. I'm showing you the good angle there, lol! Also at the time I had no clue what rigging actually was, I thought animating entailed just rotating the bones... :) Oh boy.

Oh nice, I prefer animation too! And rigging! That's the good stuff.

It's rare I see peoples who like rigging, good thing, they need some. X3

I should try to animate again a little for the fun, I'm rusty ( especially on the rigging ).

So I've heard! Its definitely frustrating but also SO satisfying. I just love it.

Oh me too! I was thinking of rigging this cat on Max on my own since I know how to do that. :D Buuut its really difficult to switch back to max after using maya for a while, at least for me.

HONESTLY?? i think the face looks IMPROVED in the 3D model, it looks squishy and more expressive, which is super cool because often that Expressive Look of a drawing gets lost in 3D!! yet u manage to do it somehow, what a talented bab
